The upcoming Dead Space remake is just one example of this, and with some gameplay footage being dropped recently, fans of the survival horror game are no doubt looking forward to this latest offering of the nightmarish classic. At 14, the original title in the series is quite old by gaming standards, and while it hasn’t aged too much, the remake is an opportunity to inject some up-to-date terrors using modern development tools and techniques. However, in the meantime, one person is going in the opposite direction.

As spotted by PCGamesN, an independent developer called Fraser Brumley is in the midst of demaking Dead Space to make it look more like a PS1 game. In a post on Twitter, they said they are hoping to have it out by the time the remake hits digital storefronts next January. When asked whether or not it was going to be a reconstruction of the whole game, Brumley said they are only looking to demake the “first level or so.” A clip embedded in their tweet shows off some of the gameplay, and it does look pretty old school. Brumley’s demake project is being developed in Unreal, with a number of people in the comments looking forward to what’s essentially a retro alternative to Motive’s upcoming remake.
The 2008 title developed by Visceral is beloved by the horror community, to such an extent that legendary director John Carpenter has said he’d like to make a Dead Space movie. Whether or not this will come to fruition cannot be said at this stage, but Carpenter, director of horror hits like The Thing and the original Halloween, is known for being an avid gamer.
Easily considered to be one of the most anticipated horror games coming up, the Dead Space remake has got a lot of fans of the genre excited. With the Last of Us remake releasing not long ago and Capcom’s reimagining of Resident Evil 4 coming in March, things are looking pretty lucrative for horror remakes and remasters.
Dead Space will release on January 27, 2023, on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
