A Reddit user named Matikata uploaded a video of themselves and a few friends taking part in a virtual “Fight Club” to r/modernwarfare Saturday, which they say went on for seven rounds and eventually pulled in every member of both teams. They gathered in the square underneath a tower on the Khandor Hideout map added to Modern Warfare this March, and the Hardcore Cyber Attack mode made each player knock out their opponents in one punch.

Matikata said in the comments that their group of friends tries to play a game like this at least once a week, and it can often be easy to “throw it out there and see who responds.” They also talk about other player-driven games they have enjoyed within Modern Warfare, such as rounds on Rust using only Riot Shields and knives.
Apparently, every player in the game that Matikata highlights was able to stand around and make references to Fight Club, David Fincher’s classic film from 1999 — though as the comments on Reddit point out, even bringing it up is a violation of the rules of Fight Club. Given computer hardware company Nvidia recently confirmed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has sold over 30 million copies, it makes sense that a good amount of those players would have seen the movie.
The ideas presented by Fight Club have become enough of a cultural hallmark that people tend to make, or at least notice potential references to it in all kinds of places. For example, players have described a collection of beetles as forming a Fight Club in the Animal Crossing: New Horizons museum.
References aside, the idea for a fun game within a game that Matikata shared on Reddit could inspire other fans to try taking on their friends in more creative ways. As Activision counts down to the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, who knows what other possibilities will come about in the upcoming game.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
